Connect iPod to Car Stereo
Last modified Thu, Sep 13, 2007

The 4 best ways to connect your iPod to your car stereo !

The iPod car stereo solutions fall into four categories:

FM Transmitters

There are two varieties. One allows you to tune your radio to any unused frequency and set the corresponding frequency on your iPod, and the other is preset to a specific frequency. You probably want the one that allows you to select the frequency - gives you more flexibility and you're not locked into just a couple of frequencies.

For more detail on what function you should look for when you buy check FM Transmitters compared (40 compared).

Discover more about how FM transmitters work and how to make them work for you, read About FM Transmitters.

Own a Video iPod here is what you'll need iPod Video FM transmitters (for all video models).

If you are an iPod Nano owner iPod Nano FM Transmitters (both Nano 1G And Nano 2G).

If you own an iPod Shuffle (1G or 2G) or own another model of MP3 player find your FM transmitters here (should have this next week).

Direct connect auto adapters

The direct connect kits are the most expensive solutions and usually require custom installation. This is by far the best solution and delivers the best fidelity. Yes, you'll actually hear your iPod through those expensive speakers without static or hum or interference just like you would listening to an inserted CD. An additional advantage is your built-in CD or steering wheel controls will now control your iPod so it is a safer and easier solution to use. The main kits are listed and include the manufacturer web site so you can find out more.

Auxiliary input

This is the plug labeled AUX you'll see on the back of most home stereos. It allows other audio devices to be played through your stereo. This AUX input is beginning to appear on factory installed car stereos which makes connecting your iPod to these car stereos a snap. A simple and inexpensive stereo 3.5 mm headphone connector is all you need, available at Radio Shack or see iPod Cables to purchase.

Cassette connectors

Other than the AUX connection mention above this is the easiest and least expensive method of connecting your iPod to your car stereo. If you still have a cassette player in your car you should definitely check this out. It is cheap, easy to use and works pretty well. Find all iPod cassette adapters here. We probably should mention these will work with any iPod, Shuffle or any MP3 player since they connect through the headphone jack - a universal solution. Another point, if you still use a cassette player attached to your home stereo cassette connectors will work there too!
