iPod Motorcycle
Last modified Fri, Nov 30, 2007

What is the best way to mount or hold and listen to your iPod while riding your motorcycle.

To use your iPod successfully while you ride requires a good way to mount it or a convenient pocket. A comfortable way to listen while you are wearing a helmet would seem to be essential too.

There is also a big question of safety, if you have to grope around for your iPod or fumble for it or you get distracted trying to adjust sound volume, well you know what that can mean. That said, bringing your music collection with you for long trips or just a weekend ride can often add a lot to your travels.

ipod nano handle bar mountSo we searched for some good ways to mount your iPod on your motorcycle and not surprisingly there are a couple of solutions. The Strata Bike mount - built for mountain bikers with an easy to use clip on clamp that fits 22mm to 26 mm bars. This is designed for the iPod Nano. For a few more iPod bike mounts here.

For those of you that enjoy and ride the big touring bikes and have a cigarette lighter hidden away these combination charger and goose lamp flexible extensions might work. We have to admit we never tried it so your mileage may vary. The Tuneflex from Griffin Technologies is a flexible neck ipod mountgood example but there are a few manufacturers that make these so shop around. We have them all listed here at the iPod auto docking system page since that is what they were designed for. Check them out you may get some interesting ideas.

If hanging your iPod in the wind in plain view isn't your idea of a good solution you can always jam it in your pocket. ipod remote wrist strapDo that and you immediately run into the problem of how to control your iPod. We think we have a couple of products that might make this easier than you might think. First we always liked the idea of remote control for your iPod and there are a number of these available. They work as advertised and not too pricey. The SportCommand from Belkin may be just what were looking for, designed to strap to your arm or wrist. Heres a photo but make sure you check out some of the other iPod remotes

While we are still on the subject of iPod control there are some ipod backpack speakersunusual clothing products with the iPod controls built-in. The clothing itself seems sort of "back to the future". Check here for iPod clothes you might be surprised.

Now you can mount your iPod, put in in your pocket or maybe this backpack from Scosche with built-in speakers and iPod dock might do the trick for you. Once you decide how to carry your iPod you'll need a way to listen and even share the music with your riding partner.

We have located a couple of products that we think you'll find useful. ipod audio boosterThe Boostaroo splitter amplifier from Up/Beat Audio and the made for helmet speakers from Helmet Audio.

The splitter with amplifier will boost your audio - probably important on the highway and importantly at the same time allow you to share your music with earphone splitteryour riding partner. Your rider will need her own earphones naturally. This combinatiion starts at about $30 but if all you want are Headphone Splitters without the amp then get these from Belkin for about ten dollars. More Unique iPod accessories can be found here.

The Helmet Speakers we list here are specifically designed for use with a motorcycle helmet or snowboardingmotorcycle ipod earphone helmet and if you're interested the link will take you to site for purchase. Inexpensive at $19.95

You can read about these speakers and amplifiers along with other earphone choices here at iPod earphones. There are plenty of choices and worth browsing since there are a number of shapes and sizes from in ear canal type that block outside sound to some that clip on behind your ear.

That is about it. We are very interested in your solutions. Please drop us a note at Feedback (photos welcome) and let us know what worked for you. We'll publish the photos here - you, your partner, your bike and of course your iPod solution. - Editors
