How to replace the LCD Screen in your Video iPod. These instructions apply to 5th generation models
If you're looking for iPod Nano screen repair
Our good friends over at Kokopelli Music have provided these instructions. Kokopelli provides iPod replacements parts and services for all your iPod repair needs. The following "do it your self instructions" may occassionally refer to Kokopelli parts but can be applied to any 5th generaton iPod video and replacement screen. Editors
The following step by step procedure - if studied and followed - will allow almost anybody that can handle a screw driver, to replace their own video screen. The LCD or liquid crystal diode screen will need to be replaced for any number of reasons, the most common, a cracked lcd screen, blinking screen, dark or dead iPod screen. The good news about this particular type of broken iPod is it is a relatively simple and inexpensive matter to perform. One other thing, when you're finished you'll have a brighter iPod screen, the satisfaction of having done it yourself and you will have saved a bunch of money too!
That said if you don't feel up to the task you can easily send it off to Kokopelli or one of the other recomended services listed on the right side of this page.
Jeff - the owner at Kokopelli - has some words of encouragement before you start:
Go slow! Read the instructions, study the photos. NEVER force something, because most likely it will break. If you do break something, or if something comes unplugged that shouldnt be, dont panic, jstay calm, and if you dont think you can fix it, just email us at kokopellimusic we will do our best to help you. If you decide youd rather have us do the replacement for you, STOP, go to our website and purchase the Installation Only option, and well be happy to do the rest of the job for much less than it will cost you to replace your iPod.
Now get your tools together and let's "get 'er done".
| Tools required: 2 nylon tools (included with most kits); 1 small (size 000) Phillips screwdriver (not included); 1 small slot-head screwdriver or knife blade (not included). Time required: 15 to 30 minutes. |
| 1. Put a piece of tape on the center button of the click wheel, so it won't fall apart when you open the iPod. Fold over the tape edge so you can peel it up later. |
2. Open the iPod using the nylon tools provided. Insert the first tool, then insert the other tool and run it around the edge of the iPod, As you move all the way around, the two sides will pull apart. |
3. Lift the bottom of the back plate about 1", and disconnect the battery ribbon cable located at the bottom right corner. |
